How do you keep your sense of self while doing the best by your children?

I have decided that, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em (your kids, that is). My evenings are swallowed up by driving around to rugby training, rowing training, Duke of Edinburgh stuff and guitar lessons (see 'editor's blog' -- that's me -- for details of my gas-guzzling week). I'm not going to take up rugby, I'm not that mad, and Duke of Edinburgh awards are not for someone of my seniority. But, since I don't have to time to choose an alternative pursuit, and also because it looks so wonderfully fun, I've got permission from my older boy to join the rowing club.

Does any other parent or step parent have any good ideas/experience of how to keep your sanity and sense of self while also doing the best you can for your children?
