HELP! My teenager is an alien

by Sarah Newton

teenager alienThis is a clear, practical and friendly book that addresses a lot about living with a teenager that can drive you crazy with worry – or just plain drive you crazy.

Addressing the most common problem scenarios it looks not just at your teenager’s behaviour but also at the way that you respond to it and, in some cases, try to over-manage it. For example, when addressing a teenager’s lack of ‘responsibility’ Sarah Newton suggests leaving them to learn by experiencing the consequences, rather than nagging them as if they were still children. (Haven’t cleaned your teeth? Haven’t packed the correct books for school? Now see what it is like if you have bad breath or get into trouble with the teacher.)

Each chapter is followed by case studies and ways towards solutions, by helping put systems in place that will help your teenager to help him/herself to become more organised/motivated/confident/respectful, etc. The latter part of the book comprises an A-Z ‘first aid kit’ and ‘Strategies for dealing with the most common alien attitude invasions’.

Sarah Newton, a former police officer who specialised in working with young offenders, is now a teen development coach who presented the ITV2 series My Teen’s a Nightmare – I’m moving out! She has a complete grasp of the day-to-day realities of how teenagers think and feel, and says: ‘...it is no good telling me that your teenager is too bad or this will not work with them, because I simply will not believe you.’
