GIVE UP!
How to Quit without feeling S**T
by Patrick Holford with David Miller and Dr James Braly
Are you addicted to sugar, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, illicit or prescription drugs? It is not impossible to quit your addiction without feeling s**t. This book provides a fast, safe and highly effective way to stop cravings, end addiction and recover energy and happiness – without suffering in the process.
There are addictive substances which are culturally acceptable within limits (alcohol, caffeine, cigarettes and sugar), those which are taboo (heroin, cocaine and cannabis), and those which are prescribed (sleeping pills and antidepressants). But irrespective of how we view these substances they affect the brain in much the same way. And it is the brain that is central to beating addiction. So, how does the brain becomes addicted and how can it be safely and naturally ‘unaddicted’? The answer is through a combination of diet, specific supplements and lifestyle factors that help ‘reset’ your brain’s chemistry, depending on your addiction.
Tried and tested
I have read this book from cover to cover and, while I am not a scientist, the explanation about neurotransmitters, their function and how they can be damaged (and, happily, rebuilt) is clear and comprehensible, even for me. And it makes such a lot of sense that I have been following its advice about diet and supplements to help ‘unscramble’ my brain and beat my own particular cravings. I’ve only been doing this for three weeks and, believe me, it’s a long time since I have felt so healthy, clearheaded and focused.
The authors are specialists in nutrition and addiction and boast a 90% success rate with their techniques. See

GET TALKING!
‘fink’ conversation cards
It’s a simple concept. A pack of prompt cards to get the whole family chatting over a meal. FINK Cards (Family Interaction Nurtures Kids) were designed by a mother to help mealtimes become less chaotic.
The playing-card-like pack asks questions like ‘Who inspires you?’, ‘What is your favourite day of the week?’ and ‘If you could choose a superpower, what would it be?’ The purpose is to get the whole family to share views and ideas, develop listening and communication skills, and gain mutual understanding and respect for each other.
I have brought out the pack a few times with my two boys (aged 17 and 15) and their stepdad. They are maybe a little too old and cynical and respond: ‘Oh, Mum, this is rather contrived.’ However, some of the questions have got them going, especially, ‘If you were Prime Minister, what would you change?’
I suspect they’d go down better with slightly younger children more willing to embrace the concept. For just a fiver, they’re definitely worth a try, as anything that can delay your children from rushing back to the telly or the X-Box as soon as dinner is over has to be a good thing.
